Lobuche East Lobuche Peak is a popular destination in the Himalaya for adventure seekers and mountaineers, located at the Everest region. This magnificent peak offers exhilarating climbing experiences, combining with Awe-inspiring views of Majestic mountain peaks including Mt.Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oye, Amadablam, Mt. Pumori etc. As a trekking peak, every year hundreds of thousands mountaineer reach to its summit. 

It was first ascent by Laurence Nielson and Ang Gyalzen Sherpa in 1984. Since then it has become a favored destination for climbers. The peak has two summits: Main Lobuche East with an altitude 6119m and Lobuche West 6145m. The distinct two summits offers different challenges for climbers, however Lobuche East Being the more popular choice for climbers. 

Lobuche peak is classified as PD+ grade in the Alpine system, that means it requires some technical climbing skills, such as using crampons, ice axes, and roped climbing etc. Prior climbing experience is beneficial, however our professional Sherpa guides are able to guide members from very basic and make inexperienced to skilled climber.

Itinerary

Arrive in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Meet with your trekking guide and team, and finalize preparations.
Overnight stay in a hotel in Kathmandu

Visit some of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu (Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, Pashupatinath, and Kathmandu Durbar Square).
Complete any necessary permit and paperwork.
Prepare for the trek.
Overnight stay in a hotel in Kathmandu.

Take an early morning flight to Lukla.
Begin the trek to Phakding.
Enjoy the views of the Dudh Koshi River and surrounding landscapes.

Trek through lush forests and cross suspension bridges.
Reach the gateway to the Everest region, Namche Bazaar.
Acclimatization day: Explore Namche Bazaar and take short hikes.
Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.

Hike to higher altitudes and then descend to sleep at a lower elevation for better acclimatization.
Explore the town, visit the Sherpa Culture Museum, and enjoy panoramic mountain views.

Trek through rhododendron forests with stunning views of Everest and other peaks.
Visit Tengboche Monastery, a spiritual center of the Khumbu region.
Overnight stay in Tengboche.

Descend through forests and cross the Imja River.
As the altitude increases, notice the change in the landscape.
Overnight stay in Dingboche.

Another acclimatization day to aid adaptation to higher altitudes.
Optional hike to Nagarjun Hill for panoramic views.

Trek through the Khumbu Khola Valley.
Pass through Dughla and ascend to Lobuche.
Overnight stay in Lobuche.

Trek to Lobuche Base Camp.
Prepare for the climb and receive necessary instructions.

Spend a day or two for the summit push, including acclimatization and weather considerations.

Begin the summit attempt on Lobuche Peak (6,119m / 20,075ft).
Descend back to Lobuche Base Camp.

This day serves as a buffer in case of unfavorable weather conditions or other delays.

Descend to lower altitudes, retracing your steps through Dingboche.
Overnight stay in Pangboche.

Continue descending, passing through Tengboche and forests.
Reach Namche Bazaar for a well-deserved rest.
Overnight stay in Namche Bazaar.

Descend further to Lukla, marking the end of the trek.
Reflect on the journey and enjoy the last moments in the mountains.

Take an early morning flight back to Kathmandu.
Spend the day at leisure in Kathmandu.
Optionally, explore the city or do some last-minute shopping.
Farewell dinner with the team.

  • Airport Transfers: Arrival and departure transfers between the airport and your hotel in Kathmandu.
  • Accommodation: Accommodation in Kathmandu (before and after the climb) and during the trek in teahouses or lodges.

FAQs

Is previous climbing experience required to attempt Lobuche Peak?

While prior climbing experience is beneficial, Lobuche Peak is considered a suitable climb for climbers with some trekking experience and a good level of fitness. Basic mountaineering skills like using crampons and ice axes can be taught during the climb. However, it’s recommended that climbers have experience with high-altitude trekking and exposure to multi-day trekking conditions. It’s also important to be well-prepared physically and mentally for the challenges of high-altitude climbing.

When is the best time to climb Lobuche Peak?

The climbing seasons for Lobuche Peak are typically during the pre-monsoon (spring) and post-monsoon (autumn) periods. The best times are:

  • Spring (April to early June): This is a popular time for climbing as the weather is relatively stable, and the skies are clear. The temperatures are moderate, and the mountain is often in excellent condition for climbing.
  • Autumn (late September to November): Another favorable season due to clear skies and stable weather. The views are stunning, and the temperature is pleasant during the day.

It’s important to avoid the monsoon season (summer) as the weather can be unpredictable and trails might be affected by rain. Winter climbs are also possible but require additional preparations due to colder temperatures and potential snow.

What permits are required for Lobuche Peak climbing?

Climbing Lobuche Peak requires a few permits, including:

  • Sagarmatha National Park Permit: This permit is required for entering the Sagarmatha National Park, which covers the Everest region.
  • Khumbu Rural Municipality Permit: This permit is specific to the Khumbu region and is required for most treks and climbs within the area.
  • Lobuche Peak Climbing Permit: This is the climbing permit specific to Lobuche Peak. It’s issued by the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA) and is essential for summiting the peak.
